Rock mechanics is the study of the mechanical behavior of subsurface sedimentary strata and rocks that are formed. The basic principle is that rock simply responds to stress by changing in volume or form. The change in the rock volume or form due to the applied stress is called strain. Rocks subjected to compressive stress (+) or tensile stress (−) can go through three stages of strain. Engineering Rock Mechanics Part II: Illustrative Worked Examples can be used as an independent book or alternatively it complements an earlier publication called Engineering Rock Mechanics: An Introduction to the Principles by the same authors.

It contains illustrative worked examples of engineering rock mechanics in action as the subject applies to civil, mining, petroleum and environmental. "The 3 rd edition of the text book Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics by William G. Pariseau completes the author’s goal, stated in his first edition, of including a chapter on foundation engineering that follows the addition of a chapter on dynamic phenomena given in his second edition.

Important developments in the progress of the theory of rock mechanics during recent years are based on fractals and damage mechanics. The concept of fractals has proved to be a useful way of describing the statistics of naturally occurring geometrics.
